Back Surgery Basics

Monday September 18, 2006
For people with unrelenting back pain, the good news is that surgery is generally not the treatment of choice. However, back surgery still may be presented to you by your doctor as an option for pain relief. Beware, though, because studies have shown that patient evaluation of outcome often do not match the doctors’ pre-surgical optimism. Research also reveals that doctors in the the U.S. perform the highest number of back surgeries in the world. And because of this, Failed Back Surgery Syndrome is on the rise. Its all in my two articles, What is Back Surgery? and What is Failed Back Surgery Syndrome - FBSS?

I agree with you, that there are sometimes other options to keep from having surgery. We are not always informed and aware that we have other options.I have chronic back and neck pain, somedays cant get out of bed. I chose not to have the surgery, but to be placed on medication and therapy instead. My family purchased Responselink Medical alarm. They provide 24/7 emergency alerts, voice to voice response, meal and prescription reminders and they are more affordable than nursing facilities or back surgery. These systems are readily available and affordable, if more people were aware, there would be less complicated surgeries and more of us trying harder to make it on our own.
