Tai Chi an an ancient system of movement based in Taoist (prounounced "dow-ist") philosphy from the east. It began in 12th century China as a weaponless martial arts form. Now in 2007, many people in the west engage in it for health reasons, including managing chronic back pain. Researchers have especially focused their efforts on the effect of Tai Chi on older adults. A 2006 study published in Alternative Therapy Health & Medicine Journal shows Tai Chi to significantly help balance, muscle strength, flexibility and endurance in seniors. Other studies have shown it can prevent falls and improve psychological well-being.

When you do tai-chi it may seem like a slow moving dance that challenges your balance and teaches you how to move from your pelvis. Tai chi also helps develop concentration. It is regarded as a moving meditation.

There are a variety of styles of Tai Chi, and in each one, it is very important to pay attention the the form as you learn and practice.
