Ankylosing Spondylitis

Wednesday October 17, 2007

Ankylosing spondylitis is an autoimmue disease that causes the spine to fuse. It is a form of arthritis. Unfortunately, getting a diagnosis can be a challenge because symptoms are easily mistaken for more common back issues. But if you have a pronounced loss of flexibility of your low back, you should get it checked. Also, ankylosing spondylitis occurs most frequently in young men.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, therapy for typical back problems is essential for people with ankylosing spondylitis. Back exercises, including core strengthening of the abdominals, are high on the list. Proper posturing for activities of daily living such as walking and sleeping are also important. Breathing exercises help develop your lungs and exercising in the water is a great way to stay fit despite the effects of the disease. If the fusing of your spine happens in an upright position, you can maintain your ability to function as the disease progresses, according to the ACR. This is where the exercise, posture development and therapies can really help you for a lifetime.
