FDA Directs Opioid Manufacturers to Stop Making Unapproved Medications

Last week, the FDA ordered manufacturers of opioid medication containing morphine sulfate, hydromorphone or oxycodone that have not been approved to stop making them within 60 days. They also ordered distributors of these medications to stop selling them within 90 days. The purpose of the warning letters to manufacturers is to protect the public from drugs that were "grandfathered in" by the FDA many years ago. The FDA says these medications may have safety and labeling issues, and might not be as pure as those drugs that have been approved. Please note that this is not a recall.

To check if your medication is affected, go to the FDA’s announcement and scroll down the page for a list.

According to an online article in the TimesRecordNews on WitchitaFalls.com, the director of the FDA’s compliance office says there will still be plenty of pain medications left on the market.
