Most people who have been diagnosed with spinal arthritis are strongly encouraged by their doctors to exercise. Both stretching (range of motion) and strengthening type exercise is important. If you go see a physical therapist, she'll likely have a basic set of exercises to give you to help manage pain and symptoms. She may also recommend water exercise.
If you want to spice up your basic (but necessary) exercise set, you might consider yoga. Physical therapist and yoga instructor, Debbie Turczan from New York gives a sampler yoga routine for people with arthritis in my article Yoga for Spinal Arthritis.
