If you're planning or considering back surgery anytime soon, you may want to get out the carrot sticks.  Studies that compared measured body mass index (BMI) to complications arising from back surgery found definite correlations.  Basically, the bigger that BMI number is - i.e. the heavier and more obese you are, the more chance you have for a surgery related problem.  It's all in my article:  Obesity and Back Surgery
