Deep Vein Thrombosis

Definition: Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot in the legs. It is caused by inactivity.

Should a clot disengage from the vein wall, a life threatening situation may be at hand. Signs of a disengaged blood clot are very serious and should be reported to a physician immediately. They are:

  • local swelling
  • redness
  • heat
A patient with deep vein thrombosis who intends to exercise should consult with their doctor first.
