Pressure Sores and Decubitius Ulcers

Definition:

Most often known as pressure sores, decubitus ulcers are injuries to the skin and underlying tissues caused by prolonged sitting or lying. The pressure that is put on the area of the body that contacts the supporting surface, over time, denies the skin and related structures the oxygen and nutrients needed to maintain health.

Decubitus ulcers are often affect people in wheelchairs, because of the prolonged pressure on parts of their legs, hips, etc.

Pressure sores are very serious. Healing them requires medical attention and an interdisciplinary approach.

Examples:
Pressure sores often occur in spinal cord injured persons. Pressure sores are also known as bed sores or pressure ulcers. In medical parlance, pressure sores are known as decubitus ulcers.
