The Facet Joint

Anne Asher
Definition: The facet joint, known as the zygapophyseal joint in medical parlance, is made up of 2 superior processes (extensions of bone projecting upward), interconnecting with 2 inferior processes(which project downward) from the vertebra directly above.

Both the superior and inferior processes are located on the back of their respective vertebral body. There are a pair of them. Each pair of processes can be found on either side of the spinous process.

  • The superior process is located on top of the vertebra.
  • The inferior process can be found on the bottom.

The facet joint is a key player in keeping the entire spinal column stable as one unit with many interlocking pieces.

Also Known As: zygapophyseal joint
