Definition: Active trigger point that causes trigger points in other muscles. Researchers have found that certain trigger points have relationships with those in other muscles.

For example, the trapezius muscle, which is located on top of the shoulder, can cause trigger points in muscles of the jaw and neck/head area. Sometimes, a key trigger point might go undiagnosed because most of the pain is felt in corresponding satellite trigger points. When the key trigger point is treated successfully, and the symptoms go away, the trigger points in the satellite muscles become inactive without themselves being treated.
