Orthostatic Hypotension

Definition: Orthostatic hypotension is a drop in blood pressure due especially to moving from laying down to standing up. Symptoms include:
  • dizziness
  • lightheadedness
  • nausea.

If orthostatic hypotension occurs, laying on the back with feet elevated is the recommended action.

To prevent an experience with orthostatic hypotension while exercising, the following actions may be helpful:

  • avoid quick movements
  • drink a lot of water
  • use compression stockings
  • use an abdominal binder
  • monitor blood pressure while exercising
