Definition: Osteoporosis is a disease in which the mass of the bones is decreased. People with osteoporosis are at an increased risk for fracture.

Bone marrow normally has small holes in it. The holes of osteoporotic bone are much larger.

There is no one cause of osteoporosis. Factors range from how much exercise the patient has gotten over the years, to how well the bones formed in childhood, to nutritional factors and more.
