What I Tried...

I used a book on the Alexander Technique.

What Happened...

I learned some day-to-day methods for improving posture and reducing backache. They work really well and are easy to learn. I hardly even have back or neck pain, and when I do, it is ALWAYS because I neglected to follow these simple guidelines. I still use them, and would some day like to take an Alexander Technique program.

Lessons Learned

  • Bending your knees is really important
  • Carrying weight is best done when the back is straight and the weight evenly distributed
  • It's a good idea to stand with the weight of your body distributed equally between both feet
  • Squatting rather than bending saves your back, but I still can't get my heels on the floor when I squat, even after trying for 10 years
  • Little kids have perfect posture, then "learn" bad posture. If you want to see how to stand, sit and move correctly, watch a 3 year old

Anne Asher, Back & Neck Pain Guide, says:

That's so fantastic that you were curious about and willing to embrace habit change as a way of keeping pain out of your life!
