Thank you for talking @ Ankylosing Spondylitis
Our daughter (35 at the time) was diagnosed with the disease 2 years ago.
She had been suffering with strange hip problems since a teenager, it would come and go…and feel like her hip would get out of joint. They could find nothing wrong. She had MRI etc….She had much pain on and off, but was very active in many sports, and very good at everything. She could feel, she felt better, if she moved a lot. Then their son was in an accident, and much stress…afterwards she became ill, and developed nodules on her ankles, and was tired and malice. She got sick with fluelike symptoms and could not walk for 6 month. Her knees and many other joints swelled up double and so stiff w pain, she could not move. Then slowly, she forced herself to push a cart in front of her to walk. She went to the pool, as soon as she could…and went every day and exercised. Now she is hired by the swimmingpool and teaches many others…even babies how to swim. She lives in denmark, where she was given status as an invalid, but with a flex-job, meaning the government will pay you- also the days you cannot work. She had started some meds as well, which helped her recover. Now her sickness is in remission, to the point, she can funtion. But she must exercise every day to be able to stand the pain. She is now a spokesman for the Danish Arthiritis Association and tells her story, how her life was turned up-side down by this disease. She had to close down her business…but she is now very happy in her new life situation.
We have a web-site, if you like to see her teach in the pool. Many of her classes have people with back surgeries, arthritis etc…People are signed up with waiting lists to get started in the program. The FLEX-jobs in Danish Society is a wonderful provision for people who live with sicknesses.
