Back Pain Relief - Pilates or Yoga?

By January 29, 2013

Follow me on:

As health costs rise, and as fewer customers of the medical system report satisfactory results from invasive treatments such as surgery or injections, more people are turning to exercise as a way of helping themselves. The good news is that studies show even a general exercise program may help keep back pain in check.

But it's better than that. In the last few decades, numerous exercise and movement systems have been busy proving their worth as effective back pain relief methods. Two of the more well known exercise systems commonly used to control spine pain are Pilates and yoga.  What I like about both methods is that they work your muscle.  In my experience, getting strong is a necessary ingredient in managing spine pain.  Your muscle has the capacity to support your body, and keep your joints in line (which may reduce strain, and therefore pain).  Muscle work should not be ignored!

The other thing I like about both of these methods are that they work the body in alignment.  This is another necessary component of back pain reduction from my perspective.

So which should you do - Pilates or Yoga?  This article may help you figure that out.
