Definition: Anterior pelvic tilt occurs when your pelvic bone tilts forward and down. Anterior movement of the pelvis often leads to an increased lumbar lordosis (curve in the small of your back).
In ideal alignment, there is a slight amount of anterior tilt and resultant lumbar lordosis. But if you have too much anterior tilt (possibly caused by a large belly, pregnancy, tight quadriceps muscles and/or weak or overstretched hamstring muscles) the lumbar spine may curve so much that it leads to tight back muscles and pain.
