Definition: Discograms are similar to myelograms except that the dye is injected into the intervertebral disk. If the patient experiences pain symptoms after the injection, a herniated disk may be suspected. Because this diagnostic method often elicits a pain response from the patient, it is considered a controversial procedure. Additionally, the reliance on the pain response makes the test highly subjective, further qualifying it as a controversial medical procedure.
