A study in Turkey, published in the Journal of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience shows that treatment with erthropoietin is more effective than methylprednisolone for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Methylprednisolone is the commonly used treatment.

The treatment tested was for the biomechanical effects that spinal cord injury has on the living tissues of the body. After mechanical impact, affected living tissues can be destroyed by means of cellular reaction.

Previously, erthropoietin has been studied for its effects in brain injury, but not in spinal cord injury.

The study also found that methylprednisolone, the ususal treatment for SCI, was only marginally (i.e. not statistically significant) more effective than no treatment at all.
