Definition: The spinal column is a strong, flexible structure made up of the 33 bones called vertebrae.

The spinal column protects and houses the spinal cord, which runs through the middle of the column. Spinal nerves branch off from the spinal cord and exit out of holes located at the sides of the spinal column.
